IPL 2024: 3 reasons why bringing Richard Gleeson for Devon Conway is the right decision

CSK signed Richard Gleeson for his base price of INR 50 lakhs.

Chennai Super Kings’ star batter Devon Conway has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL 2024 owing to an injury. Conway was earlier ruled out of the first half of the IPL 2024 due to a thumb injury.

He also underwent surgery to treat the problem after he sustained the injury while playing a T20I series for Australia against New Zealand in New Zealand. The New Zealand opener was expected to make a comeback in the second half of IPL 2024. However, that didn’t happen to be the case.

CSK have roped in England paceman Richard Gleeson for the rest of the season. The defending champions purchased him for his base price of INR 50 lakh. Let’s now take a look at the three reasons why bringing Richard Gleeson in place of injured Devon Conway is the right call.

1. Opening slot is already sorted out

Devon Conway, an opening batter for CSK finished the IPL 2023 season as the third leading run-scorer with 672 runs. After his injury, CSK smartly roped in fellow New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra at the IPL 2024 auction.

The young left-hander who is playing only his first IPL season did provide good starts to the team. He has amassed 133 runs at a strike rate of 166.2 and is expected to get better as the season progresses.

Although Conway’s absence is indeed a blow for CSK, as for now, we can see that the opening slot is already sorted out with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra opening the innings. With that being the case, CSK’s decision to bring Richard Gleeson does makes sense.
