IPL 2024: Massive blow for CSK as Devon Conway ruled out until May due to injury

Devon Conway was adjudged the Player of the Match in the IPL 2023 final against Gujarat Titans.

In what comes as a huge blow to Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2024 campaign, their marquee player Devon Conway has been ruled out of the tournament until May owing to an injury he sustained in the 2nd T20I against Australia.

The New Zealand international injured his thumb during the second T20I against Australia at Eden Park in Auckland on February 25. After picking up an injury, he had to leave the field for an X-ray. Luckily, the scan reports confirmed that there had been no fracture.

Conway had to skip the ongoing Test series against Australia at home. The left-handed opening batter will be out of action until May after it was disclosed that he underwent surgery on his left thumb last week.

Now that the cricketer has undergone surgery, it will take him at least eight weeks to recover. This means he will not feature for more than half of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League.

The upcoming IPL will go all guns blazing on March 22, with Chennai Super Kings locking horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

What’s next for CSK?

Devon Conway amassed 672 runs in 16 games including 6 fifties in IPL 2023. Notably, he was adjudged the Player of the Match for his 47 off 25 against Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 final. His absence in the huddle will certainly be a big blow to the team’s hopes of defending the title.

History tells us that CSK’s title-winning seasons have seen openers making a telling impact. The CSK’s think-tank might try fellow New Zealand batsman Rachin Ravindra in place of injured Devon Conway for the next season.

CSK recruited the services of Ravindra for INR 1.8 crore at the auction held in late December. He had a stellar World Cup 2023 campaign wherein he scored 578 runs in 10 games including 3 centuries and 2 fifties.
