IPL 2023: 5 most surprising retentions from franchises ahead of auction
These players didn't live up to the expectations for their respective franchises.
1. Vijay Shankar
Known for his ability to bat in the middle-order and medium-pace bowling, Vijay Shankar was one of the most sought-after all-rounders in Indian domestic cricket a few years ago. However, his stocks have rapidly fallen in the last couple of years.
The new entrants Gujarat Titans gave Vijay Shankar a chance at redemption by signing him at the auction for IPL 2022 for INR 1.40 crore. However, the all-rounder failed to perform as he could only manage 19 runs in 4 matches while failing to pick up a wicket with the ball.
The all-rounder hasn’t played much domestic cricket either since the Indian Premier League 2022. Hence, it looked like an almost certainty that Gujarat Titans would look to invest the funds somewhere else. However, the defending champions have stunned everyone by retaining the all-rounder ahead of the IPL 2023 auction.
