5 Indian cricketers who may retire from Tests soon
2. Cheteshwar Pujara
Cheteshwar Pujara was once seen as the next big thing in India’s Test lineup. Tagged as India’s Test specialist, the senior pro was expected to fill the shoes of legends like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. However, despite being a reliable run-scorer for a significant part of his career, he struggled to replicate his early success in recent years.
His last Test appearance came in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia. While he has had a long and steady career, his lack of runs in the past few series raised questions about his future in the team. With Shubman Gill touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket and him taking the No.3 spot in Tests, it could potentially push Pujara towards retirement soon.
3. Mohammed Shami
It is no doubt that Mohammed Shami has been a crucial part of India’s pace attack for many years. He is best known for his ability to reverse swing the ball and bowl long spells, which has made him a crucial asset, especially in overseas conditions.
However, at 34 years old, he has been facing persistent fitness issues, which kept him away from the game. He might as well call it quits from Tests to focus on limited-overs. His last Test appearance came in July 2023 against Australia in WTC final. With India focusing on chances to newcomers like Akash Deep and Yash Dayal, Shami may have to think about stepping away from Tests.
