5 captains Chennai Super Kings can target in IPL 2022 auction

2. Steve Smith

Steve Smith IPL

Steve Smith has plenty of experience as a captain. However, he is yet to win an IPL title. Earlier, in an interview, the Australian stalwart made it clear that his ultimate goal is to win the IPL trophy. He has already skippered IPL teams and Australia for several years.

In the last season, under his guidance, Rajasthan Royals hit rock-bottom as they finished at the bottom of the points table. This is the worst season for Rajasthan Royals and they released Smith from their squad ahead of the IPL 2021 season.

Delhi Capitals made a purchase by roping in Steve Smith for INR 2 crore, in what is an absolute steal. Smith played 6 games for the Rishabh Pant-led team, scoring only 104 runs. There are chances that DC may release him ahead of the next season. If that’s the case, CSK will surely look to draft him in their arsenal.

1. David Warner

David Warner IPL

David Warner has a plethora of leadership experience in the Indian Premier League. The Australian stalwart steered Sunrisers Hyderabad to maiden IPL trophy in the 2016 season where they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore to announce their arrival in the cash-rich IPL. Moreover, Warner is the fifth leading run-getter in the Indian Premier League and SRH’s leading run-scorer as well.

The three-time Orange cap holder scored 5447 runs in the IPL in 148 matches at a fantastic batting average of 42.22. He smashed 4 centuries and 50 half-centuries to his name. However, he couldn’t lead his troops in the right direction as Sunrisers kick-started their campaign with 3 straight defeats. Under his captaincy, SRH won only 1 game and lost 5 games. He was stripped of SRH captaincy and Kane Williamson was appointed the new captain.

Warner was also dropped from the playing XI against Rajasthan Royals. Chances are high that he may be released by the SRH franchise ahead of the next season. Warner is a perfect captaincy material and is also a perfect replacement of MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings. CSK would love to have a player like Warner in the team.
