Punjab Kings were earlier referred to as the Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League. The franchise was renamed to “Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2021 season. For the record, the Mohali-based franchise is jointly owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul. The franchise co-owner also explained the reason behind the name change.
He expressed his disappointment over the team not being able to win a title since the inception of the IPL. As a result, he expected the franchise to start anew after a name change. However, that didn’t do any good to the team as they still failed to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2021 and 2022 seasons respectively. Overall, they made it to the playoffs twice and apart from that, they finished outside the top 4.
On the other side of the coin, Gujarat Titans were newly inducted into the cash-rich Indian Premier League in the IPL 2022 season. The Ahmedabad-based franchise qualified for the playoffs in their debut season. Besides that, they also topped the league stage points table by winning as many as 10 games and lost only four games. Thus, they became the only team to pile up 20 points in the league stage.
Gujarat Titans made it all the way to the finals by beating Rajasthan Royals in the first qualifier. Later on, they beat Rajasthan Royals in the final to win the maiden IPL title in their debut season. Under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya and under the guidance of Ashish Nehra as head coach, GT made their presence count in the last season.

Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans have locked horns with each other only on three occasions in the Indian Premier League. Gujarat Titans won the first meeting as they beat Punjab Kings by six wickets in IPL 2022 season in Mumbai.
However, Punjab Kings made a stellar comeback in the second meeting as they defeated Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in Mumbai. Both teams locked horns with each other in IPL 2023. Gujarat Titans emerged as the victorious side as they beat PBKS by 6 wickets in Mohali.
