Here is why MS Dhoni is called Thala by fans

'Thala' word became popular across the country.

Sachin Tendulkar was considered the god of cricket due to his fan following during the 1990s & early 2000s. The “Master Blaster” as he was fondly called was the toast of the entire nation during that period. MS Dhoni commanded the same fan following or even bigger during his 15 years of cricketing career.

The former India skipper was the darling of Indian cricket fans when he played for India but he was loved and still is the most popular figure among the Chennai Super Kings fans. CSK fans call him “Thala”.

Like every IPL season, the 2023 season also witnessed crowds in large numbers cheering for their “Thala”. No matter which team plays in the IPL you will find fans wearing yellow jerseys in the stands. Like in International cricket, MS Dhoni always tried to entertain his fans, through his destructive batting or his skillful wicketkeeping.

On the day of the 2023 IPL final, Ahmedabad Metro Station was filled with over lakh individuals to just see his destructive yet effortless shots. Apart from this, billions of his fans would have enjoyed watching him play on social media and Television sets. Although he couldn’t score that day fans would have hoped to just catch his glimpse.

Why CSK fans call him “Thala” ?

The former wicket-keeper batsman has had quite a few nicknames throughout his cricketing career like Captain Cool, Mahi, MSD, etc. During the IPL season, he is nicknamed with a special name called “Thala” which is also quite popular.

“Thala” is a word that is referred to as a leader or head in Tamil language. Due to his kind and mild nature, the name is given to him respectfully. In spite of achieving so much in the cricketing world, Dhoni’s nature was kind and mild-mannered.

The Legendary cricketer never showed arrogance due to which he has earned respect. He has also been involved in charitable causes. His fans came up with this name to show respect for his simplistic nature. The name will remain with him till the very end.

During one of the matches in the 2019 IPL season, Dhoni said that it is a special feeling to get this nickname. He further said that he is always called “Thala” in Southern India and not by his original name which makes it all the more special.
