So, the inevitable has happened. Chennai Super Kings have been eliminated from the IPL 2022 playoffs race. The defending champions’ season was hanging by a thin thread after a miserable start to the competition and they needed to win all of their remaining fixtures to stay alive in the tournament. Fittingly, Mumbai Indians defeated CSK by five wickets to eliminate the four-time champions and now the two most successful IPL teams won’t make it to the playoffs this season.
On Thursday, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings locked horns in the 59th match of the IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The Blues’ skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited the opposition to bat first. Daniel Sams proved his skipper right immediately by scalping two wickets of Devon Conway and Moeen Ali in the very first over.
Mumbai Indians’ pacer dismantled CSK batting line-up
After tasting the blood early, Mumbai Indians’ pacer went for the kill and reduced the Super Kings to 39/6 in the 8th over. The skipper MS Dhoni tried to hold one end safely as he remained unbeaten for 36 runs but he didn’t get enough support from the other end. Chennai Super Kings were dismissed for 97 runs in 16 overs to post an easy target for the opposition.
Chasing the total, Mumbai Indians also had early jitters as Mukesh Choudhary and Simarjeet Singh picked up four early wickets for the CSK. However, a 48-run partnership between Tilak Verma and Hrithik Shokeen bailed the five-time champions out of trouble. In the end, the left-handed youngster, Verma, and Tim David completed the chase to register 3rd win of the season for Mumbai Indians.
With this loss, Chennai Super Kings have officially been out of the playoffs race in the current edition. It will be only 2nd season-ever where the Yellow Army has failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Clearly, the fans were distraught after the loss and they took Twitter to show their emotions.

Well played Tilak Varma 👏 carried the team through a win. Congratulations @mipaltan Well bowled to restrict @ChennaiIPL to a low score of 97. Dhoni tried to put on some runs, but didn’t get the needed support from the other end. MI was the better team tonight. #MIvCSK #IPL2022

First win at the Wankhede this season for @mipaltan. Tilak Verma and Hrithik Shokeen kept their calm during the middle which helped MI get back in the game. Bumrah and Sam's bowling was class apart. Good one boys! 🧢👍🏻#MIvsCSK #PPpedia pic.twitter.com/MJc8e2rmET
