IND vs AUS 2023: 3 players who could replace Shreyas Iyer in ODI series

Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury during the fourth Test match against Australia.

After winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and sealing their place in the final of the World Test Championship, Team India will shift their focus to 50-over cricket and the upcoming ODI World Cup later this year. However, India are handed a major blow ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia as their star batter Shreyas Iyer has reportedly been ruled out courtesy of a back injury.

Shreyas Iyer was India’s leading run-getter across all formats in 2022. However, since the turn of the new year, he has been struggling with injuries. He missed the opening Test against Australia and then could not bat in the fourth and final Test owing to a back injury. The right-handed batter is likely to miss out on the ODI series against Australia and Men in Blue will now search for a suitable replacement.

Hence, in this post, 3 players who could replace Shreyas Iyer in the ODI series against Australia starting on 17th March, Friday.

3. Rahul Tripathi

Rahul Tripathi has been on the selectors’ radar for a while now. While he has already made his T20I debut in the national colours, he is yet to play any ODI game. He was a part of India’s ODI squad for Bangladesh but he was dropped for the series against Sri Lanka.

However, Rahul Tripathi has already impressed everyone with his attacking intent in the handful of the T20Is he has played so far. The Maharashtra batter is considered more of a T20I player than an ODI one. However, he could be the like-to-like replacement for Shreyas Iyer.

Tripathi is equally comfortable in handling both spin and pace bowling. Furthermore, he has all shots, including sweep and inside-out to tackle the spin bowling during the middle overs. All these qualities make Rahul Tripathi an ideal replacement for Shreyas Iyer in the ODI series against Australia.
