BCCI targets Stephen Fleming to replace Rahul Dravid as head coach of Team India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating Stephen Fleming as the potential successor to Rahul Dravid. As per the reports, Stephen Fleming is seen as an ideal candidate to replace Rahul Dravid.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Team India’s head coach comes to end post the T20 World Cup 2024. The BCCI made it clear that they are on the hunt for the new coach in a recent press release. BCCI secretary Jay Shah also stated that Rahul Dravid can still re-apply for the post.

The BCCI set a criteria that the upcoming coach has to be at the helm across formats. Stephen Fleming who has played 111 Tests, 280 ODIs and 5 T20Is for New Zealand understands the nuances of each and every format.

Rahul Dravid has been serving as the head coach of Team India since 2021. Under his guidance, Team India are yet to win the ICC title. India finished as the runners-up in ICC World Test Championship 2023 and ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

Stephen Fleming is seen as an ideal candidate to replace Rahul Dravid

If the reports doing the rounds are to be believed, Stephen Fleming could be the future head coach of Team India. However, there hasn’t been any official confirmation yet. Stephen Fleming is currently serving as the head coach of CSK since 2009.

Under his tutelage, CSK have won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles. According to a report by Indian Express, informal talks have taken place between Stephen Fleming and the BCCI officials during the course of the IPL.

It remains to be seen whether or not Stephen Fleming will agree to the coaching duty, which demands 10 months of work annually. It is quite clear that Team India will undergo transition in the upcoming years. The BCCI wants the team to thrive in ODIs, Tests and T20Is.
