The ongoing season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy just keeps on giving. On Monday, Ruturaj Gaikwad created history by smashing seven consecutive sixes in one over against Uttar Pradesh. In the process, he also became the first-ever batter to achieve this unique feat.
Ruturaj Gaikwad was in some mood as he smashed an unbeaten double-century as well. Among the records galore, the right-handed batter also equalled Rohit Sharma’s record of hitting 16 sixes in a single innings in List-A cricket.
On Monday, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh locked horns in the quarterfinal of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahemdabad. Uttar Pradesh won the toss in the vital game and elected to bowl first.
The bowlers proved the decision of their skipper right as Ankit Rajpoot removed the big fish Rahul Tripathi early. The UP’s bowlers kept things tight but Ruturaj Gaikwad kept scoring runs from one end. He didn’t get enough support from the other end but he kept his end intact.
Maharashtra reached 272/5 after the end of 48 overs as Uttar Pradesh looked to keep Maharashtra under the total of 300 but Gaikwad had something else in his mind.
Ruturaj Gaikwad creates history; hit 7 sixes in a single over
The left-handed spinner Shiva Singh came to bowl the 49th over little did he know what is about to follow. Ruturaj Gaikwad went berserk from the first bowl and smoked the left-arm spin of Shiva Singh for four consecutive sixes. The spinner delivered a no-ball on the 5th delivery and Ruturaj Gaikwad sent that over the boundary. The batter then took the full toll of the free hit followed by another maximum to convert that into a 43-run over.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has now become the first-ever batter in the history of the game to score seven sixes in one over. Meanwhile, he remained unbeaten for 220 off 159 deliveries, including 10 boundaries and 16 maximums.
