Mumbai Indians pacer Dilshan Madushanka to miss initial stages of IPL 2024

Dilshan Madushanka picked up two wickets in 6.4 overs before he left the field in the second ODI.

Sri Lanka’s left-arm pacer, Dilshan Madushanka, injured himself during the second ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram. The left hamstring injury rules him out of the remainder of the Bangladesh series and the initial phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, as a part of Mumbai Indians (MI).

In a statement on Sunday morning, Sri Lanka Cricket informed that an MRI scan revealed the state of the injury, with the 23-year-old returning home for rehabilitation. The statement also expressed that it was a new injury, with no fixed time frame for the recovery. Madushanka will now miss the third and final ODI, along with two Tests of the Bangladesh tour.

“We got the report on his injury only today (Sunday), and it shows a small tear. It’s a new injury. We’re not yet sure how long it will take for him to recover, but he’ll have to be assessed again when he goes home by the medical team at the high-performance center. For now, we know he’s out of the ODI tomorrow (Monday) for sure,” SL team manager, Mahinda Halangoda said.

Mumbai Indians receive new blow with Dilshan Madushanka’s injury

Mumbai Indians (MI) hired Madushanka for INR 4.6 crore at the mini-auction for IPL 2024. He was the third-highest wicket-taker of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India with 21 scalps in nine games. With Jasprit Bumrah, Jason Behrendorff, Gerald Coetzee, and others, the five-time champions plan to build a formidable fast-bowling line-up.

Madushanka’s left-arm angle was also a boon to create questions among the batters. In his brief T20 career, the pacer from Hambantota has collected 31 wickets in 33 games. He bowled a peach of delivery to clean bowl Virat Kohli during the Asia Cup 2022 to catch attention. The tall fast bowler will now miss the start of the tournament but is expected to join the franchise a few weeks later.

There are also doubts over the participation of Coetzee. The South Africa pacer is recovering from a groin injury currently under the MI medical team. The Hardik Pandya-led side will begin their IPL 2024 campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 23 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
