“It’s time to look at somebody else” – Sunil Gavaskar feels Bhuvneshwar Kumar has come past his best

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes the management should look beyond veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar atleast in the shortest format.

Bhuvneshwar, who has been struggling due to an injury, has been miles away from his best in whatever limited games he has played across the IPL and international games. He also looked out of rhythm in the ODIs against South Africa, that raised questions about his place in the Indian team.

With the management eyeing the T20 World Cup later this year and the ODI World Cup next year, Sunil Gavaskar believes Deepak Chahar will be a good bet in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Speaking to Sports Today, the former Indian captain said:

“I think it’s time to look maybe at Deepak Chahar now. Younger man, who is pretty much a similar bowler, swings it both ways and bat handily down the order. Bhuvi has been a tremendous servant of Indian cricket, but in the last year or so, even in T20 cricket for the franchise, he has been expensive. So maybe it is time to look at somebody else.”

“I am not even sure what kind of a future he has anymore” – Sunil Gavaskar on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s future

Unimpressed with his recent performances, Sunil Gavaskar seemed doubtful about his future with the Indian side. The 72-year-old believes Bhuvneshwar Kumar should go back to his basics and work the extra yards to get his rhythm back.

“I am not even sure what kind of a future he has anymore. He has lost out on pace, the accuracy he had at the start where he was getting the ball to move and get the wickets and then again towards the end over, the way he was coming and bowling, that has probably deserted him and it’s time for him to go back to the basics and work hard. That’s the one name that comes to mind,” Sunil Gavaskar concluded.
