IPL 2024: Ranking all 10 captains of the season

Shubman Gill will be looking forward to getting the taste of captaincy experience for the first time.

The IPL 2024 is just a fortnight away from going all guns blazing as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will lock horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the tournament opener on March 22.

As the highly-anticipated tournament is just around the corner, the players of the respective teams will be rushing off their feet in the upcoming days for ideal preparations going forward in the fresh season.

It is no brainer that the captain plays a quintessential role in a team’s success in T20 cricket owing to the game’s fast-paced nature. The skipper needs to make swift decisions that can significantly affect the outcome.

The captain is mainly responsible for devising the game plan which includes batting orders, bowling changes, and field placements. As we head into the next season, let’s rank the captains purely based on IPL experience.

10. Shubman Gill

Unlike other captains, Shubman Gill has yet to get a taste of captaincy experience at the IPL or international level. After Hardik Pandya shifted his base from GT to MI as part of the trade deal, Gill has big shoes to fill for the Ahmedabad-based franchise in IPL 2024.

Gujarat Titans have been a force to be reckoned with ever since their entry into the competition. GT won the title in their debut season under Hardik Pandya by beating Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022. In the subsequent season, GT reached the finals but lost to CSK.

9. Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan has been one of the top performers with the bat in the IPL. He is the second leading run-scorer in the tournament with 6617 runs including 2 tons and 50 fifties. While he has thrived as a batsman, IPL captaincy hasn’t been his strong suit so far.

The veteran led SRH and PBKS in 2014 and 2023 but both teams failed to qualify for the playoffs. Under his captaincy, the Punjab Kings finished sixth on the points table in the last season. He still has a lot of catching up to do as a captain going forward in the next season.
