Matheesha Pathirana had an impressive debut season in the 2023 Indian Premier League tournament. He was signed by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 20L in the mini-auction ahead of the tournament. The pacer turned out to be one of their best buys this season.

He played a crucial role in their title-winning campaign, bowling at the death. His low release makes it harder for the batters to judge the deliveries. Matheesha Pathirana’s brilliance at the death was on display against the Royal Challengers Bangalore this season, when he defended 19 runs off the final over against the likes of Suyash Prabhudessai and Wanindu Hasaranga.

In 12 matches, Pathirana took nineteen wickets at an average of 19.52, and an economy rate of 8.00. His best bowling figures of 3/15 came against the Mumbai Indians this season. He dismissed Nehal Wadhera, Tristan Stubbs and Arshad Khan as Chennai Super Kings won the match comfortably.
