Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Smith got engaged in a hilarious banter while commentating during the Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans clash.
On Tuesday evening, Punjab Kings met Gujarat Titans in the 48th match of the tournament. Searching for a vital win, the Kings from Punjab managed to produce their A-game and defeated the Titans from Gujarat by eight wickets.
Batting first, Punjab Kings’ bowlers had the Titans batting on a leash and restricted them to a below-par total of 143/8 in 20 overs. On Sai Sudharshan, with unbeaten 65 runs off 50 deliveries, could put up a mini-fight.
Chasing the total, Shikhar Dhawan led the Kings from the front and stayed till the end to win the game. The left-handed southpaw got a handy company from Sri Lankan batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa to take Punjab Kings closer to the victory.
However, it was Liam Livingstone who stamped his authority on the game with a breezy knock of 30 runs off 10 deliveries. The English all-rounder also smoked a 117-meter six off Mohammad Shami to register the longest maximum of the season.
Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Smith engage in a hilarious banter
The former English batter and the former South Africa skipper were commentating alongside Murali Kartik during the 14th over. The official broadcasters then aired the list of the players with a maximum of sixes this season on the screen.
Kevin Pietersen was reading down the list with Jos Buttler hitting 30 sixes, Andre Russell hitting 22 maximums, and Liam Livingstone hitting 20. As the Englishman finished reading the stats, he teased his mate in the comm box saying, “Liam Livingstone might not have hit many, but he has hit the biggest (Six of the tournament). “Have you ever hit a six in your career, Mr Smith?”
The camera was cut to the commentary box where Kevin Pietersen could be seen laughing alongside Murali Kartik. However, Graeme Smith, who won the IPL 2008 with Rajasthan Royals, remained unfazed by Pietersen’s joke and comeback with the harshest of the burns.
“I need to waste my time with your rubbish….Did you ever win an IPL?“ asked Graeme Smith to Kevin Pietersen.
