Vinod Kambli arrested on charges of drink and drive in Mumbai; gets out on bail
Vinod Kambli represented India in 104 ODIs and 17 Test matches.
Former India international Vinod Kambli was arrested on charges of drink and drive on Sunday (February 27) by the Bandra Police. He reportedly hit a passing car and was taken into custody for investigation.
The 50-year-old cricketer was arrested following a complaint from a resident of the said Bandra society. He was charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section r.w. 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act (driving under the influence of alcohol).
Vinod Kambli was released on bail later in the day, according to news agency PTI. Kambli also allegedly argued with the complex’s watchman and some residents after the incident.
Meanwhile, controversies go hand-in-hand with Kambli. The cricketer has been called out for his misconduct a couple of times. Many argue that it was his attitude that came between his talent and his road to success. The southpaw grew up training under the watchful eyes of Ramakant Achrekar alongside Sachin Tendulkar.
Vinod Kambli’s International career
Vinod Kambli first grabbed attention when he shared a record-breaking partnership with Tendulkar in Mumbai’s school cricket. He made his One Day International and Test debuts in 1991 and 1992, respectively, and was also featured in the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
He was the first Indian batter to score back-to-back double centuries when he made 224 against England in Wankhede in 1993 and then smashed 227 against Zimbabwe in his next Test match. However, his Test career was over before he turned 25, making 1084 runs in 17 matches with 4 centuries and 3 half-centuries.
Vinod Kambli carried on playing ODI cricket for India, featuring in the 1996 World Cup, scoring a century against Zimbabwe in Kanpur. He 2477 runs in 104 matches with 2 centuries and 14 half-centuries.
