WATCH: Umpires ask Rishabh Pant to remove taping on his gloves at Headingley

India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant hasn’t brought the best out of himself with the bat in the ongoing Test series against England. However, he has been pretty good at lifting the bowlers’ morale on the field. He often guides the bowlers by telling them where to bowl.
Meanwhile, the young wicket-keeper made the headlines for a bizarre reason during the third Test match at Headingley in Leeds. England already stamped their authority by scoring 432 runs in the first innings. Earlier, Team India were skittled out for just 78 in the first innings.
During the second day’s play, India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant and the skipper Virat Kohli were seen having a chat with the on-field match officials. The incident happened just before the start of the third season when the on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Kettleborough told Pant to detach the tapes on his wicket-keeping gloves.
The taping was branching his fourth and fifth fingers which are incorrect as per MCC laws. Law 27.2.1 says that If, as permitted under 27.1, the wicket-keeper wears gloves, they shall have no webbing between the fingers except joining index finger and thumb, where webbing may be inserted as a means of support.
Dawid Malan should be recalled: David Lloyd
The umpires made their move to the dressing room when Mohammed Siraj dismissed Dawid Malan on the last ball before tea. After that, he got the tapes removed from Rishabh Pant’s gloves. Meanwhile, the commentators on the air came up with an explanation. Nasser Hussain and David Lloyd clarified the confusion for the viewers.
“There’s lots in the laws of the game about the webbing. But we’re hearing from the third umpire, Richard Illingworth, that he wasn’t allowed. He is not allowed to tape his gloves like that, so they’ve asked him to take that tape off,” Hussain added in a statement.
Further, Lloyd added that Dawid Malan should have been recalled. It is because the dismissal would be ‘illegal’ with the gloves being taped. Nonetheless, Nasser Hussain felt that tapes were there throughout the series and not just in this match.
