Sunil Gavaskar picks Shubman Gill as India’s stand out performer in 2023

Former India opener and skipper Sunil Gavaskar has picked Shubman Gill as India’s standout performer for 2023 in place of Virat Kohli and pacer Mohammed Shami. Gill scored 2154 runs in 48 matches for India in 2023 and also won the Orange Cap during the 2023 IPL.

Although India didn’t win the World Test Championship and the 2023 World Cup the team finished at the top in all three formats.nTeam India had an impressive year as players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, etc showcased their caliber with some outstanding performances.

Sunil Gavaskar was asked to pick the best performer for India in 2023 during an interview with a Sports Show where he picked Gill as his favorite choice thus ignoring some big names. Gavaskar stated Gill also scored 890 runs in 17 IPL games for Gujarat Titans thus winning the Orange Cap. The right-hander was the most consistent performer in the entire season for Gujarat Titans.

Gavaskar stated, “the stand-out performer i think should be Shubman Gill for the way he batted in all formats during the entire 2023 season. Although his performances in tests looked ordinary, his form in ODIs & T20Is was brilliant as he looked unstoppable. He should be the stand-out performer in the men’s team.”

Shubman Gill’s records in all three formats in 2023

The right-hander scored 258 runs in 6 tests with an average of 28. When it came to his performances in the limited overs format and the T20Is the opener looked impressive. He scored 1584 runs in 29 ODI innings registering 5 centuries and 9 half centuries in 2023. Gill scored 312 runs in 13 T20Is in 2023 with an impressive strike rate of 145.11.

Shubman Gill also became the youngest to score a double century in the limited overs format when he scored 208 in 149 balls against New Zealand on January 18 2023 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
