3 reasons why Shubman Gill should be Rohit Sharma’s successor as the captain of Team India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squad for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe (from July 6). Shubham Gill has been appointed as the captain of the young Indian team. Shubman Gill will be looking forward to the challenge as he will be leading his troops for the first time in the Indian colours.

Meanwhile, Senior cricketers such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav who are competing in the T20 World Cup 2024 will be given a rest. Meanwhile, young cricketers like Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Reddy were duly rewarded for their exploits in the IPL 2024 season with maiden India call-ups.

This will be a great opportunity for Shubman Gill to pick up valuable lessons as a young captain. Cut to the chase, let’s take a look at the three reasons why Shubman Gill should be Rohit Sharma’s successor as India captain.

1. Leadership potential

Shubman Gill has got a taste of leadership experience at such a young age. He served as the vice-captain of India’s U-19 team that won the U-19 World Cup. Besides that, he led Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024 season. Under his captaincy, the Ahmedabad-based franchise failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The 2022 IPL champions finished eighth on the points table as they managed to pick up 12 points (six wins). Nevertheless, that must have been a learning experience for Shubman Gill, who will be looking to sort out the woes and come back stronger again in the next season.
