The T20 World Cup 2022 has been full of upsets so far. After West Indies failed to cross the qualifying stage, Ireland shocked England in a Super 12 fixture in Group 1. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe also shocked the world by defeating Pakistan in the Super 12 Group 2 fixture. Pakistan had already lost their opening game to India and a loss to Zimbabwe has seriously dented their chances to qualify for the semifinals.

Men in Green can still qualify for the semifinals but there are several permutations and combinations as they will have to rely on other results now. In one such vital Group 1 game, India locked horns with South Africa at the Perth Stadium on Sunday. The whole of Pakistan were hoping for a victory for India as it would have helped their cause.

However, their hopes to advance to the knockout stage suffered a major blow as South Africa defeated India by 5 wickets. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss on a spicy surface and chose to bat first. The Proteas pacers came out all guns blazing as they dismissed the Indian top order to reduce the Men in Blue to 49/5 in the 9th over.

With India’s defeat to South Africa, Pakistan’s chances to qualify for the next round have been diminished drastically. They have defeated Netherlands but must win both of their remaining fixtures to have a chance to qualify for the next round.

Meanwhile, India could also not breathe easy as they must win their remaining two games against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh to advance to the next round.
