WATCH: Umesh Yadav makes a mess of Joe Root’s off-stump with a magnificent delivery

Umesh Yadav caught the big fish just before the end of day 1.

Umesh Yadav has been one of the impressive fast bowlers for the Indian national cricket team. The 33-year-old fast bowler plies his trade for the Vidarbha cricket team, Indian cricket team, and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

The right-arm pacer has represented Vidarbha at the domestic level since 2008. Interestingly, he is the first player from the team to have played Test cricket. He represented Team India in 48 Tests, 75 ODIs and 7 T20Is. Umesh took 148 wickets in Tests, 106 wickets in ODIs and 9 wickets in T20Is.

The veteran pacer used to be a regular feature in Tests and ODIs. Nonetheless, due to his inconsistency, he lost his place in the national setup. However, that’s no big deal for him as he has a history of making fantastic comebacks in international cricket.

During the fourth Test match between England and India at the Oval, the Indian selectors listed Umesh Yadav in the starting XI. The right-arm pacer made a worthwhile contribution to the visitors as he dismissed England’s Test captain Joe Root with a peach of a delivery.

The incident took place during the third ball of the 16th over when Umesh Yadav stuck to his line and length and delivered the ball in the right channel. Joe Root failed to decode the delivery as he had no option other than to defend the delivery. Nonetheless, his approach put him on the back foot in the first place.

The ball beat the skipper quite cleanly as it went through the gate and hit the off-stump. Joe Root couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed as he made his way back to the dressing room after scoring 21 runs. Earlier, Team India were skittled out for 191 runs in the first innings.

It could have been worse had it not been for Shardul Thakur’s impressive knock down the order. He played one of the finest knocks of his career by scoring 57 off just 36 balls. Shardul smacked as many as 7 boundaries and 3 sixes. Indian captain Virat Kohli scored 50 including 8 fours.

In reply, England already lost 3 wickets in the first innings. While Umesh got the big wicket of Joe Root, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed England’s opening pair – Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed. The hosts are trailing by 138 runs in the first innings.
