India Women have buried the ghosts of the Women’s Asia Cup 2018 by winning the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 in some style on Saturday. India Women won the record 7th Asia Cup title to establish their supremacy in the Asian continent once again. India Women and Sri Lanka Women squared off in the final of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Sri Lanka Women skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and elected to bat first with a smile on her face on a pretty dry surface. However, it was the only time she could afford a smile on her face as their innings began with hara-kiri of run-outs as both Sri Lanka openers went back to the dugout courtesy of a runout.
From there, the pacer Renuka Thakur ran through Sri Lanka Women’s middle order to reduce them to 18/6 after 7 overs. Once the major damage was done, India Women spinners Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Sneh Rana took over to bag a couple of wickets each and restricted Sri Lanka Women to 65/9 in 20 overs. It was also Sri Lanka Women’s lowest-ever total in the Asia Cup’s history.
Smriti Mandhana shines with the bat as Indian Women become the Asian Champions
Chasing the total, India Women came out all guns blazing as Smriti Mandhana smacked the Sri Lanka Women bowlers all around the park. In their bid to stay aggressive throughout the chase, Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues lost their wicket as well. However, the skipper Harmanpreet Kaur walked in to take charge at one end.
In the end, India Women completed the chase with 11.3 overs to spare and 8 wickets in hand. Smriti Mandhana remained unbeaten for an explosive half-century, 51 runs off 25 deliveries, to wrap up the competition. The left-handed southpaw smoked six boundaries and three maximums during her knock.
The fans were pretty pleased by the efforts of the India Women’s team and praised them dearly.
