Sourav Ganguly is a former Indian cricketer and captain, born on July 8, 1972, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India. He was born to Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly, and his elder brother Snehasish Ganguly is also a former cricketer. Ganguly started his cricket career in 1989, representing West Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. 

He made his international debut for India in 1992 and quickly established himself as a talented batsman. In 1996, he was made the captain of the Indian cricket team, a role in which he served until 2005. As captain, Ganguly led India to some significant victories, including the historic win in the 2002 NatWest Series in England. 

Ganguly was a left-handed batsman and was known for his elegant strokeplay. He scored over 18,000 runs in international cricket, including 38 centuries. He was also a handy medium-pace bowler and took over 100 international wickets.

After retiring from cricket in 2008, Ganguly took up administrative roles in cricket. He served as the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal and became the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2019. He was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in 2004.
