“Playing Test cricket is great, captaining was even better” – Jasprit Bumrah on India captaincy ambitions

Jasprit Bumrah has been a linchpin of the Indian bowling attack, consistently taking key wickets when it matters the most. India’s premier fast bowler is well and truly one of the highly-valued assets across all three formats of the game.

Apart from his bowling credentials, he had once ventured into captaincy, when he led India against England in one Test in 2022. Although India lost the game, Jasprit Bumrah did pick up some captaincy lessons on the go. The team management considers Jasprit Bumrah as one of the captaincy options in Tests.

With Rohit Sharma 36 years old, the Indian think-tank must have already been looking for options to replace the veteran. Jasprit Bumrah was asked about his captaincy ambitions and to which, he has expressed a great deal of interest in leading the team.

Jasprit Bumrah shares his thoughts about captaincy ambitions

During an interview with Guardian, the premier fast bowler expressed that it was the ‘utmost honour’ in captaining the team. Jasprit Bumrah even stated that he loved the responsibility before stating that he is interested to lead the team if he is offered the captaincy role in future.

“I did one game and it was the utmost honour. Playing Test cricket is great, captaining was even better. Yes, we lost but we were ahead in the match and I loved the responsibility. Sometimes as a fast bowler you go down to fine leg and switch off but I loved being involved in every decision, right in the thick of things. And given the opportunity, of course, who wouldn’t?” he added.

Jasprit Bumrah further cited Pat Cummins as the perfect example during the interview, adding that fast bowlers are the smart ones in terms of captaincy. “Pat Cummins plays for Australia, the number of matches differs and that kind of thing. Not many [seamers] have done it before. But it’s a good example that yes, fast bowlers are the smart ones, they do a hard job and they know what to do around the game,” added Bumrah.
