IPL 2023: 3 players who can captain KKR in Shreyas Iyer’s absence

Shreyas Iyer suffered back injury during fourth Test match against Australia.

Ahead of the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) might face a blow as their skipper Shreyas Iyer struggles with fitness. The right-handed batter complained of back pain during the recently concluded fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

After scans, Iyer was ruled out of the remainder of the match. As per the latest reports, he might miss a few matches or even the entire season due to injury. In such case, the Kolkata-based franchise will be required to appoint a new leader for their pack. Here we look at three such names who can lead the side.

Andre Russell was bought by the KKR franchise in 2014 and since then, he has been an integral part of the team. His incredible power-hitting and ability to bowl tough overs make him a valuable option in the side. Apart from these, he also contributes immensely in fielding.

The West Indies all-rounder has ample experience of playing in T20 leagues around the world. When it comes to picking playing XI, he is an automatic choice. Hence, in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, he could be handed the responsibility to lead the pack.

Russell has scored 2035 runs in 98 matches, averaging 30.37 at an astonishing strike-rate of 177.88. In the process, he also picked 89 wickets for his side.
