In a major setback to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Washington Sundar is ruled out of the competition for at least one week due to injury concerns. As a result, he will miss the next two games for the Orange Army against Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings, respectively.

The SRH’s head coach Tom Moody confirmed Sundar’s injury. It is a body blow for the Sunrisers as Washington Sundar is the only quality spinner among their ranks, and his unavailability leaves a huge void in the squad.

The young all-rounder has had a decent season so far as Sundar has managed to pick 4 wickets in 4 matches at an economy rate of 7.85. Moreover, he also has contributed 58 runs with his willow.

Washington Sundar failed to complete his bowling quota in the last game against Gujarat Titans courtesy of a hand injury. Before walking off the field, Sundar bowled a tight spell of three overs, giving away only 14 runs without any wicket.

Meanwhile, updating Sundar’s injury status, the SRH’s head coach said, “Washington has torn the webbing in his right hand, between his thumb and first finger,”

“We must monitor that over the next two-three days. Hopefully, it isn’t a significant blow. I’d imagine it’d take probably a week or so to settle down,” added Tom Moody.

Leg Spinner Shreyas Gopal, Abdul Samad, and all-rounder Jagadeesha Suchith are the options SRH have to replace Washington Sundar in the playing 11.

Tom Moody also updated Rahul Tripathi’s injury, which saw him retire during his knock in the previous match against the Titans.

“He’s fine, he’s just getting cramped,” said Tom Moody.

“It’s humid conditions and we get him to run to hotspots, so he covers a lot of ground in the first two-three overs. That is something we may need to look at to make sure we get the maximum out of him with the bat because obviously, he is a very valuable player for us,” he further added.

What’s next for Washington Sundar and Sunrisers Hyderabad?

Sundar will look to regain full fitness as soon as possible, as his absence leaves a huge hole in the SRH’s system.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad are enjoying a two-game winning run after defeating Gujarat Titans by 8 wickets in the previous fixture. They began their season with back-to-back losses but have managed to bounce back after winning the next two consecutive matches.
