‘I have never seen anything like that’ – Ricky Ponting on Glenn Maxwell’s heroics against Afghanistan

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting is the latest name to react to Glenn Maxwell’s heroic knock to take his team over the line single-handedly against Afghanistan in the ongoing World Cup 2023.

Talking about the knock, Ponting said that he has been in the scene for so long but has never seen a knock like that. He stated that is the most remarkable thing to happen in Cricket and he would be surprised if something similar repeats in future.

“I have been around a lot of games playing and calling and I have never seen anything like that, and I’ll be very surprised if I see anything like that ever again. It was the most remarkable thing you’ve probably ever seen in cricket,” Ponting told ICC.

Ponting further compared Maxwell’s innings to Ben Stokes’ famous knock at Headingley against Australia in the Ashes Series 2019. He believes that the Australian all-rounder’s knock has exceeded that brilliance from Stokes, given the win confirmed Australia’s semi-final berth.

“Ben Stokes’ Test innings to win it (third Ashes Test in 2019) at Headingley was something that I had never seen before and I think this one goes past that just for the sheer enormity of what it means for the Australian cricket team making the World Cup semi-finals.”

Glenn Maxwell’s knock will be remembered for ages

Despite struggling with back spasm, cramps and feet not moving, Glenn Maxwell didn’t stop there. He continued to fight in the middle for this team and used his hands exceptionally well to score boundaries.

His 201 runs off just 128 balls, including 21 fours and 10 sixes, helped the Baggy Greens seal the game by 3 wickets and qualify for the next round. The Pat Cummins-led Australia has not been at their level at the marquee event so far.

They needed an inspiring knock like that to level up the confidence and unity. They will play their last group stage match against Bangaldesh on Saturday (November 11) at MCA Stadium in Pune.
