Mumbai Indians are likely to miss their star batsman Suryakumar Yadav in their IPL 2022 opener against Delhi Capitals on March 27 at the Brabourne Stadium.

Suryakumar suffered a hairline fracture in his hands during the three-match T20I series against West Indies. The injury kept him out of the three-match T20Is against Sri Lanka, with BCCI asking him to report to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the injury has not healed as expected and Suryakumar Yadav is likely to miss the first match for Mumbai Indians. PTI quoted a senior BCCI official as saying:

“Surya is currently at the NCA doing his rehabilitation. He is well on his way to recovery but there is a possibility that his participation in the opening game will be a real touch and go affair.”

“So there could be a possibility that he might be advised by the board’s medical team to not risk playing the opener. I think by the second MI game, he would be 100 per cent match fit. It is likely to be more of a precautionary measure if he doesn’t play the first game,” he added.

Suryakumar Yadav to be available from 2nd game

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav was also part of the NCA camp designed for white-ball players in view of the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. While the camp has ended, the dynamic middle-order batsman is likely to remain in the BCCI facility for a couple of more days before joining Mumbai Indians squad for IPL 2022.

The 31-year-old batsman was retained ahead of the auction for a whopping INR 8 crore. He has been one of their most consistent batters in the last couple of seasons and captain Rohit Sharma will hope he returns to the playing XI soon.

If things go as per expectations, Suryakumar Yadav might feature in Mumbai’s second game against Rajasthan Royals on April 2.
