Jayant Yadav to stay back for South Africa ODIs after Washington Sundar tests positive: Reports
Just as when the coronavirus cases started to drop off dramatically, there has been a sudden rise in coronavirus cases across the world. The third wave of the coronavirus pandemic struck the nation and the government has been doing its best to announce lockdown.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Washington Sundar, who is part of the three-match ODI series against South Africa has tested positive for coronavirus. The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer tested positive at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. So, he is unlikely to take part in the upcoming ODI series.
On the other hand, Jayant Yadav is part of the Test squad in the ongoing Test series against Proteas. Now, he has been asked to stay back for the ODI series as a backup option for Washington Sundar. The all-rounder tested positive last week. He is also about to finish the required week-long isolation.
Washington Sundar unlikely to travel to South Africa for ODI series
Meanwhile, BCCI is trying to decipher whether Washington can be permitted to join the rest of the ODI players, who take a trip to South Africa this week. The all-rounder is currently in Bengaluru, where he was training at the NCA along with other Indian white-ball cricketers.
In the latest development, it has been learnt that all other players except for Washington have returned negative tests and are ready to travel. Sundar was last seen playing for Team India in a T20I game against England in Ahmedabad back in March 2021.
Since then, his injury sidelined him. After that, he made a comeback in the domestic arena. He played really well in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament. He aggregated 148 runs in 8 matches and also took 16 wickets to his name. Washington also registered best figures of 5/48 as Tamil Nadu reached the final.
