Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is one of the most popular teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). One of the most discussed things about RCB is the owner. The Indian businessman and former Member of Indian Parliament, Vijay Mallya, is said to be the owner of RCB for a long time. Also, the connection of Mallya with the alcohol beverages business has always been the talk of the town.

However, after our research, we found out that the real owner of RCB in 2021 is United Spirits Limited (USL). It is one of the largest alcoholic beverage companies by volume and the largest Indian alcoholic beverage company. The United Spirits Limited is a subsidiary of British multinational beverage company Diageo. USL named their team name after one of their alcoholic beverage brands, Royal Challenge.

According to a survey conducted by Duff and Phelps, the brand value of RCB was around Rs 585 crores (US $83 million) in 2019. The franchise made a net profit of Rs. 143 crores in the 2018-19 year which increased to Rs. 313 next year.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, profits of all IPL teams suffered a hit as a result of zero revenue from the attendance of fans in the stadiums. Fans were not allowed to watch matches from stadiums in IPL 2021. Also, as the second wave of pandemic spread in India, the second half of IPL 2021 has been shifted to UAE. However, a recent report suggests that the net worth of RCB would go up to 595 crores.

Vijay Mallya is an Indian entrepreneur and businessman. He is also associated with many other industries like aviation infrastructure, real estate and fertilizer. He was also the founder of Kingfisher Airlines and former co-owner of the Force India Formula One team.

Mallya is famous for his luxurious lifestyle. He was the chairman of USL when he bought RCB in 2008 for US$116.6 million from The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The 65-years-old entrepreneur was also the director of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL).

Mallya was always present with RCB team management at the auction table, so it was widely circulated by the media that Vijay Mallya is the owner of RCB. Besides the son of Vijay Mallya, Siddharth Mallya was also present in RCB matches in IPL along with brand ambassadors of RCB like Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone. However, Mallya resigned from the post of chairman of USL in 2016.

Also, he resigned from the post of the director of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL). The Chief Commercial Officer of Diageo India Prathmesh Mishra is now chairman of RCB.
