Not a big name in stature, but the release of Murugan Ashwin has raised several questions about Mumbai Indians’ think tank. No one can deny the utility of a leg spinner in the T20 format. Moreover, quality Indian leg-spinners are rare commodities to get their hands on.

Murugan Ashwin was Mumbai Indians’ most successful spinner last season. The leggie accounted for 9 wickets at an economy rate of only 7.86. Furthermore, his signing didn’t burn a hole in the franchise’s purse as he only cost INR 1.60 crore.

Mumbai Indians have also released Mayank Markande and releasing two Indian leg spinners might come back to haunt them. There will not be many leg-spinners available in the mini-auctions and it could be a risky move for Mumbai Indians if they fail to sign a worthy replacement.
